Grays and Torreys

Summer is winding down, we thought it would be good to get in at least one more high elevation hike. Turns out there is a pair of fourteen-ers just outside of Denver, Gray and Torrey. It is a well trafficked trail, and nothing too strenuous, perfect if you ever have an extra day in Denver.

We started our day around 4am since thunderstorms were predicted in the afternoon forecast. Unsurprising, the dirt road up to the trail head was an extra-rough washboard. About half way up the three mile dirt road we decided to park the car and hike to the trail-head. This added an extra 3 miles round trip to our hike, however we were eager to get started.

The hike starts just about the tree line and meanders through some alpine grass and stream beds for a few miles. Pretty quickly you enter a well maintained trail through boulder fields and start the vertical gain. At some point you have a choice, break left and ascent Grey or aim for Torrey first. We actually missed this turn off, it is marked by a sign that says stay on the trail. There is only a sharpied in "G" and "T" indicating the right direction.

The last bit of the ascent to Torrey is quite steep. We made it just in time to see some dude propose to some lady. It was romantic! She said yes. One great thing about these peaks is that you are at a local maximum, many thousand feet higher than nearby peaks.

We easily crossed the ridge to Gray. The peaks are at roughly the same elevation but the ascent to Gray was easier than Torrey. After some photos and a snack, we made our way down to the car, spotting a mountain goat along the way. Overall, it was a pleasant hike. Approximately 11 miles over six or so hours with a total elevation gain of around 4,000 ft.
